Row of Tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera). In evolutionary terms, this is an ancient tree related to the flowering tree Magnolia. A deciduous tree, the leaves have an unusual shape, each with four ‘corners’ or lobes. Yellowish green flowers with an orange throat, similar in shape to those of Tulips are borne in early summer. The Tulip Tree is native to the Eastern United States and was introduced into England about 1650. It is a fast growing tree as is evident from these three examples planted near the perimeter wall about 2000. Tulip trees, like Magnolias, can take a number of years to flower but it is worth the wait. They don’t bloom for their first 15 years, but once they start, they can continue blooming until the end of their life span.
