Tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera). In evolutionary terms this is an ancient tree related to the Magnolia tree. A deciduous tree, the leaves have an unusual shape, each with four ‘corners’ or lobes. Yellowish green flowers with an orange throat, similar in shape to those of Tulips are borne in early summer. The Tulip Tree is native to the Eastern United States and was introduced into England about 1650. Tulip trees, like Magnolias, can take a number of years to flower but it is worth the wait.
