Dawn Redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides. Native to South West China , this tree was discovered in the wild by  a botanist T. Kan in 1941 and introduced into cultivation in 1948.  It is a rapidly growing tree and in some 20 years this specimen has attained 11m. It has an elegant conical shape with a fluted trunk, particularly noticeable in winter.  Green linear leaves are arranged in flattened ranks and provide attractive autumn colour.  Green globular cones occur in hot summers.  A deciduous conifer, autumn colour is a pale yellow hue.
