Holm Oak Quercus ilex The evergreen oak is native to the Mediterranean region. This specimen has four wide spreading limbs. Foliage is greyish green with a white undersurface. Young foliage has wavy margins with spines similar to Holly and gives rise to the scientific ilex (holly). The mature leaves are elliptic in shape. In autumn the familiar seed of oak, an acorn, is seen on the tree. (Source: Dr Mary Forrest, UCD)
